Truth.

Can we talk?

Because I fear that we have a lot of Pastor Weiners out there.

Nearly everyone I’ve talked to has met a Pastor Weiner at one point or another in their life. I’ve had a couple as bosses.

Here are the characteristics of a Pastor Weiner:

1. They many times have a strong conviction about Biblical truth, but are not able to always tell the truth at a personal level.

2. They feel that since they are the pastor, that they will never be/should never be questioned in the area of their personal integrity.

3. They start out small… covering themselves in small matters, but before they know it, find themselves in the middle of major church conflict because of the things they do and say.

4. Their public persona is that they are a strong leader, but personally, they are insecure and need lots of affirmation. Many are scared to death of losing their jobs. Some should be.

5. They love their positions of power, and are not afraid to use them.

Anthony Weiner was asked repeatedly about what happened with that twitter picture.

He told half truths. Those quickly turned into bold-face lies. Bold face lies that he repeated to every media organization that would listen.

Then the real story came out.

More pictures. More women. His half-truth story began to fall apart.

So he came clean.

Tears in his eyes.

But, yet, he refuses to step down. Instead, he digs in.

I’ve seen this happen many times. In the church.

Yes, the church.

Please. Don’t be a Pastor Weiner.

Don’t defame Jesus by lying, cheating, scheming. Be truthful. Be 100% truthful. All the time. Even when it hurts. Even when you make a mistake. Even when it will certainly make you look bad, or silly, or cheap, or sinful. Be honest. Be transparent.

Your words mean something. At least they should.

Because truthfully, being a Pastor Weiner is cause for removal from the park. If you only tell the truth after being backed into a corner or being confronted by evidence that you’re a liar… it’s too late.
