Daily D - Those Who Mourn

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:4

The head coach of the high school football team in the town where I pastor was killed in an automobile crash two days ago. A word like “shocking” is insufficient for days like this. Coach Horne grew up in the area. He was married and had a beautiful family. He graduated from the same high school where he coached. His ripples of influence extend far beyond his family. This week can be described as a time the community is grieving.

The words of Jesus are understood in a different light when grieving. On good days it’s hard to comprehend a blessedness found in mourning. But for those who truly mourn, a beautiful secret is found…God’s comfort. Many believers have spoken of a gentle, warm, safe feeling - like being held by loving unseen arms - they never experienced in the absence of grief. I don’t think Jesus wants us to mourn, but there is a blessing found in our darkest days – the peace and presence of God – a treasure for troubled times.

Lord, may your kind of comfort be very evident today, bless the people in our community.
